George Lucas' empire is estimated at approximately $300 bn. Lucas sold to Disney for $4.05 bn. Does George Lucas know something about 2012 that we don't?
By now many of you know that George Lucas sold his empire to Disney for $4.05 bn. Lucas' empire is estimated to be worth approximately $300 bn. So, why would he sell so low? The last installment of Star Wars grossed over $850 mm alone.
As the title of this thread says: Are Disney and George Lucas Hiding Something?
But get back to reality for a moment. Not too long ago, I remember very clearly an interview with Seth Rogen (the actor) where he says he sat down at the same table with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg and Lucas was very serious and told him the world would end in 2012.
Now he sells his empire? Disney announces it the same week as Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast?
From Seth Rogen:
“He’s going on about the tectonic plates and all the time Spielberg is, like, rolling his eyes, like, ’My nerdy friend won’t shut up, I’m sorry…’
“I first thought he (Lucas) was joking… and then I totally realized he was serious and then I started thinking, ’If you’re George Lucas and you actually think the world is gonna end in a year, there’s no way you haven’t built a spaceship for yourself… So I asked him… ’Can I have a seat on it?’
“He claimed he didn’t have a spaceship, but there’s no doubt there’s a Millennium Falcon in a garage somewhere with a pilot just waiting to go… It’s gonna be him and Steven Spielberg and I’ll be blown up like the rest of us.”
One thing is casual conversation but another is to act on that conversation and sell your empire for a fraction of what it's worth. Why now (2012)? And why so low ($4.05 bn)?
Why would they announce it in the middle of an impenetrable news cycle surrounding a major natural disaster, and when U.S. stock markets are closed? It really makes you wonder.
