The Evidence That Consciousness Creates Reality: Welcome To The Matrix

Higgs Boson - Consciousness Quark
Does consciousness create the material world? Before we answer this question, it’s important to first go into what the material world is actually composed of at a fundamental level. “Reality” is not simply made of tiny physical pieces, like a bunch of marbles or tiny little bowling balls. Molecules are made out of atoms, and atoms are made out of subatomic particles such as protons and electrons which are 99.99999% empty space and electrical spin. These are then made out of quarks, which then are a part of a Superstring field which consists of vibrating strings that give rise to fundamental particles based on the nature of their vibration.

We interact with a world of physical objects, but this is only due to the way our brains translate sensory data. At the smallest and most fundamental scales of nature, the idea of “physical reality” is non-existent. From the Nobel Prize winning father of quantum mechanics, Neils Bohr, “Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real. If quantum mechanics hasn’t profoundly shocked you yet, you don’t understand it well enough.” When you touch your hands together, it is really just empty space touching more empty space, with the slightest ingredient of energetic spin of these minuscule particles. The constituents of matter have absolutely no physical structure.

This is important to understand, because if we think of the world of quantum physics as being a world of bowling balls and and marbles, then the idea of consciousness creating reality doesn’t really make sense. But understanding that reality is a cosmic concoction of non-localized energy and empty space, it becomes clear that our thoughts and the signals they register in the brain also have these same properties at their smallest level. Our thoughts are also an activity of the universe, and all activities take place within the same quantum realm prior to manifesting in physical reality.

Consciousness is one of the hard problems in science. There is no way to explain how something as material as chemical and physical processes can give rise to something as immaterial as experience. There is no reason why subjective experience exists at all, or how sentience evolved. Nature would operate just as well without subjectivity, and when we actually try to scientifically investigate the origin and physics of consciousness, we get hints that maybe consciousness and reality are not as separate as material science would have us think.

Here are some principles in quantum mechanics, taken from the book “The Self-Aware Universe” written by former professor of theoretical physics for 30 years at the University of Oregon, Dr. Amit Gozwami:

Is Reincarnation a Trap?

This article would be a book if we traced the origins of reincarnation theory back through every culture and epoch. Because of that and because of the inadequacy of language, we would do better to begin by considering incarnation and reincarnation by looking at the imagery and feeling that these words evoke.

The accepted use and definition of “incarnate” evokes images of something individual descending from one place, down into matter. This is spatial and temporal thinking unique to the human mind that most easily grasps 3rd dimensional realities of time and space. Most people will imagine incarnation as an individual unit of consciousness (that they call the “soul”) leaving it’s place and moving, like an orb of light, down to the earth sphere and then residing in and around the human body.

But what if there is another way of thinking about this?

Allow me to begin with two statements:

1. Just because a teaching is old, doesn’t make it true.

To highlight this, imagine that 10,000 years from now, a group of humans discovered the Georgia Guidestones during an excavation. Would you advise them to view this as ancient wisdom or truth given to mankind by sages? Or would you suggest instead that they consider the possibility that the stones were placed there by a billionaire with fascist leanings?

2. Anecdotal evidence and subjective experience are not proof of a thing.

This subject matter deserves to be handled both delicately and with assiduity. This involves the examination of both the origin of reincarnation theory (tracing backwards to the conditions of the epochs of which it arose) and its implications. That is, following the concept forward to its logical conclusions and implications. What does it imply about the nature of reality and the condition of the human-state?

Let’s try an exercise in allegory and imagination to view incarnation from another perspective.

In this exercise you are an observer, independent to the scene described:

Imagine that you are on a grassy knoll. There is no civilization around, only nature. The sky is clear and the sun is shining brightly. You are facing north, the sun is southwest, behind you, over your left shoulder.

Floating in the air a short distance from you are seven magnificent mirrors. These mirrors are not truly physical as they are also not truly mirrors but, for the sake of this exercise we will imagine them this way.

Each mirror is unique in its beauty. Each has a different frame and shape. The glass in each mirror is equally unique. There are waves and forms, areas that are concave, some convex and colours, beautiful arrays of colours.

You then become aware that over your right shoulder stand seven white columns. They are also unique in their height, circumference and shape but the material from which they are made (sand, limestone and white clay) is pretty much the same, although some variations are present. Unlike the mirrors, the columns are physical and subject to entropy.

The 10 greatest changes of the past 1,000 years

In Europe, the last millennium has been shaped by successive waves of change, but which shifts, in which centuries, have really shaped the modern world? Historian Ian Mortimer identifies the 10 leading drivers of change.
 Ch√Ęteau de Loches
My castle is not your castle … the keep of Loches castle, shown here in a detail from Emmanuel Lansyer’s 1891 painting, was built in the 11th century.
11th century: Castles

Most people think of castles as representative of conflict. However, they should be seen as bastions of peace as much as war. In 1000 there were very few castles in Europe – and none in England. This absence of local defences meant that lands were relatively easy to conquer – William the Conqueror’s invasion of England was greatly assisted by the lack of castles here. Over the 11th century, all across Europe, lords built defensive structures to defend them and their land. It thus became much harder for kings to simply conquer their neighbours. In this way, lords tightened their grip on their estates, and their masters started to think of themselves as kings of territories, not of tribes. Political leaders were thus bound to defend their borders – and govern everyone within those borders, not just their own people. That’s a pretty enormous change by anyone’s standards.

12th century: Law and order

A 12th-century illustration of men in the stocks
A 12th-century illustration of men in the stocks Banged up ... detail from a 12th-century illustration of men in the stocks.

If you consider visiting a foreign country, one of the most important aspects you bear in mind is how safe you will be while you are there. Indeed, probably no other factor deters people from visiting a place as much as an absence of law and order. So it follows that the introduction of the systematic application of law and order marks quite a turning point in European history. This happened through the compilation of law books, the development of jurisprudence, and, in England, the development of “justices in eyre” – the forerunners of circuit judges – together with the establishment of trial by jury.

Max Igan is back to discuss  his latest journey throughout Europe where he planned to be mostly an observer and gauge where people stood as it relates to our current paradigm. We also took a geopolitical journey around the world and discussed the creation of ISIS/ISIL, Ebola, Syria, Ukraine, and who could is pulling the strings and why. In order for people to become change agents, we need to remove the notion that we don't have the power to effect change. Change usually happens with one person's idea. People need to experience truth for themselves. Sharing the truth with them is not enough. We can show them the door; but it is up to them to open it and go through it. Most importantly, it is up to the individual to disconnect from the matrix and reconnect with consciousness. Every human is born with unlimited possibilities.

Planet-forming Lifeline Discovered in a Binary Star System

ALMA Examines Ezekiel-like “Wheel in a Wheel” of Dust and Gas

For the first time, researchers using ALMA have detected a streamer of gas flowing from a massive outer disc toward the inner reaches of a binary star system. This never-before-seen feature may be responsible for sustaining a second, smaller disc of planet-forming material that otherwise would have disappeared long ago. Half of Sun-like stars are born in binary systems, meaning that these findings will have major consequences for the hunt for exoplanets. The results are published in the journal Nature on 30 October 2014.

A research group led by Anne Dutrey from the Laboratory of Astrophysics of Bordeaux, France and CNRS used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to observe the distribution of dust and gas in a multiple-star system called GG Tau-A [1]. This object is only a few million years old and lies about 450 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Taurus (The Bull).

Like a wheel in a wheel, GG Tau-A contains a large, outer disc encircling the entire system as well as an inner disc around the main central star. This second inner disc has a mass roughly equivalent to that of Jupiter. Its presence has been an intriguing mystery for astronomers since it is losing material to its central star at a rate that should have depleted it long ago.

While observing these structures with ALMA, the team made the exciting discovery of gas clumps in the region between the two discs. The new observations suggest that material is being transferred from the outer to the inner disc, creating a sustaining lifeline between the two [2].

Material flowing through the cavity was predicted by computer simulations but has not been imaged before. Detecting these clumps indicates that material is moving between the discs, allowing one to feed off the other,” explains Dutrey. “These observations demonstrate that material from the outer disc can sustain the inner disc for a long time. This has major consequences for potential planet formation.”

Planets are born from the material left over from star birth. This is a slow process, meaning that an enduring disc is a prerequisite for planet formation. If the feeding process into the inner disc now seen with ALMA occurs in other multiple-star systems the findings introduce a vast number of new potential locations to find exoplanets in the future.

Upcoming flight of NASA's Orion spacecraft into space, proof that Moon landing never happened?

NASA’s newest spacecraft, Orion, will be launching into space for the first time in December 2014, on a flight that will take it farther than any spacecraft built to carry humans has gone in more than 40 years and through temperatures twice as hot as molten lava to put its critical systems to the test.

According to the video below, spacecraft Orion will test the Van Allen radiation belt first before they can send people through this region of space.

Listen carefully at around 3.36 what the man says: "We must solve this problem before we send people through this region of space” (the Van Allen radiation belt).

Didn't they already send 6 manned crews through this region on the way to the moon in the Apollo missions?

If NASA is still working on testing the Van Allen radiation belt in order to solve that problem before they can send the astronauts through this region of space, than it is really amazing what the engineers of NASA in the 60’s and with the technology of the 60’s have done to solve that problem, leading to the first moon landing in '69.

If the moon missions were real, then it seems the whole “the Van Allen radiation belt" problem should have been solved over 40 years ago and at least have landed on Mars by now and flown manned flights to one of Mars' moons or even a flyby of Saturn or Jupiter.

After watching this video I have to seriously doubt that there were ever any “NASA” manned space flights to the moon.

Research Reveals How Sugar CAUSES Cancer

The average American consumes their body weight annually in this cancer-causing substance, and yet hospitals freely feed it to their cancer patients, oblivious to the harm it does.

Hospitals feed cancer patients sugar and high carbohydrate diets for a reason: they are abysmally ignorant of the role of nutrition in health and disease -- hence their burgeoning growth and packed rooms.

Even though the science itself shows – at least since the mid-20's with Otto Warburg's cancer hypothesis -- that tumors prefer to utilize sugar fermentation to produce energy rather than the much more efficient oxygen-based phosphorylation* – hospitals have actually invited corporations like McDonald's to move into their facilities  to 'enhance' their patient's gustatory experience, presumably to provide comfort and take the edge off of the painful surgery, radiation and chemo treatments erroneously proffered to them as the only reasonable 'standard of care.'

But the times are changing, with new research requiring these medical institutions to reform their dietary strategies, at least if they wish to claim that their interventions are in fact 'evidence-based' ...

New Study Reveals Sugar Doesn't Just Feed But Causes Cancer

A groundbreaking new study, uncovered by one of our volunteer researchers at Greenmedinfo – Jonathan Middleton – is the first of its kind to identify sugar, not only as  fuel source for an already existing cancer, but as a primary driver in oncogenesis – i.e. the initiation of cancerous characteristics (phenotype) within previously healthy cells.

Published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation and titled, Increased sugar uptake promotes oncogenesis via EPAC/RAP1 and O-GlcNAc pathways, researchers addressed a common perception (or misperception) in the cancer research community regarding sugar's relationship to cancer: namely, "increased glycolysis [sugar based metabolis] is frequently viewed as a consequence of oncogenic events that drive malignant cell growth and survival."

A sacred tunnel discovered in the ancient Mexican city of Teotihuacan is filled with 50,000 ritual objects and may lead to royal tombs.

The entrance to the 1,800-year-old tunnel was first discovered in 2003, and its contents came to light thanks to excavations by remote-control robots and then human researchers, archeologist Sergio Gomez told reporters.

The site is located about 30 miles (50 km) northeast of Mexico City.

Two of the sculptures unearthed by investigators at the Teotihuacan archeological site in Mexico. Mexican archaeologists have concluded a yearslong exploration of a tunnel sealed nearly 2,000 years ago at the ancient city of Teotihuacan and found 50,000 relics.

Google’s New Computer With Human-Like Learning Abilities Will Program Itself

The new hybrid device might not need humans at all.

Are we closer to AI? (Wikipedia)

In college, it wasn’t rare to hear a verbal battle regarding artificial intelligence erupt between my friends studying neuroscience and my friends studying computer science.

One rather outrageous fellow would mention the possibility of a computer takeover, and off they went. The neuroscience-savvy would awe at the potential of such hybrid technology as the CS majors argued we have nothing to fear, as computers will always need a programmer to tell them what to do.

Today’s news brings us to the Neural Turing Machine, a computer that will combine the way ordinary computers work with the way the human brain learns, enabling it to actually program itself.

Perhaps my CS friends should reevaluate their position?

The computer is currently being developed by the London-based DeepMind Technologies, an artificial intelligence firm that was acquired by Google earlier this year. Neural networks — which will enable the computer to invent programs for situations it has not seen before — will make up half of the computer’s architecture. Experts at the firm hope this will equip the machine with the means to create like a human, but still with the number-crunching power of a computer, New Scientist reports.

In two different tests, the NTM was asked to 1) learn to copy blocks of binary data and 2) learn to remember and sort lists of data. The results were compared with a more basic neural network, and it was found that the computer learned faster and produced longer blocks of data with fewer errors. Additionally, the computer’s methods were found to be very similar to the code a human programmer would’ve written to make the computer complete such a task.

These are extremely simple tasks for a computer to accomplish when being told to do so, but computers’ abilities to learn them on their own could mean a lot for the future of AI.

FBI Whistleblower: “U.S Is Reviving Terror Scare With ISIS To Promote The Terror War Industry”

So called “terrorist” attacks have been taking place on the planet for decades, the most memorable one being 9/11. Almost 15 years later, that one “terrorist” attack has served as a massive awakening tool for the human race, allowing us to see through the veil that’s been blinding the masses for so long, but we still have a long way to go.

Interestingly, it’s a well documented fact that Al-Qaeda was a creation of the CIA, there are multiple sources that show that, and it seems that ISIS might not be any different. (source)(source) The same terrorist groups the United States and their allies are fighting against were created by the United States and their allies themselves, this is a historical fact, so it’s important we ask the same questions when it comes to ISIS and keep our minds open to that possibility.

Many believe these groups are created to give the false illusion that we are under attack, in order to justify the infiltration of other countries for ulterior motives, and many still believe we are going after “terrorists.”

Here  is a video of US four star General Wesley Clark pretty much alluding to the same thing.

The video below is of FBI whistle blower Sibel Edmonds appearing on RT news. She is a former FBI translator and founder of the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC). She gained a lot of attention in 2002 after she accused a colleague of covering up illicit activity involving Turkish nationals, which included serious security breaches and cover-ups, alluding to intelligence that was deliberately suppressed.

Here’s what she had to say about the “terrorist” group ISIS. She basically points to the belief that ISIS is the creation of those who are calling them terrorists. Think about that for a moment.

Who Runs the World? Conspiracies, Hidden Agendas & the Plan for One World Government

So, who runs the world? It’s a question that people have struggled with since people began to struggle. It’s certainly a question with many interpretations, and incites answers of many varied perspectives.

Often, it is relegated to the realm of “conspiracy theory,” in that, those who discuss this question or propose answers to it, are purveyors of a conspiratorial view of the world.

However, it is my intention to discard the labels, which seek to disprove a position without actually proving anything to the contrary.

One of these labels – “conspiracy theorist” – does just that: it’s very application to a particular perspective or viewpoint has the intention of “disproving without proof;” all that is needed is to simply apply the label. -

What I intend to do is analyse the social structure of the transnational ruling class, the international elite, who together run the world. This is not a conspiratorial opinion piece, but is an examination of the socially constructed elite class of people; what is the nature of power, how does it get used, and who holds it?

A Historical Understanding of Power

In answering the question “Who Runs the World?” we must understand what positions within society hold the most power, and thus, the answer becomes clear.

If we simply understand this as heads of state, the answer will be flawed and inaccurate. We must examine the globe as a whole, and the power structures of the global political economy.

The greatest position of power within the global capitalist system lies in the authority of money-creation: the central banking system.

The central banking system, originating in 1694 in England, consists of an international network of central banks that are privately owned by wealthy shareholders and are granted governmental authority to print and issue a nation’s currency, and set interest rates, collecting revenue and making profit through the interest charged.

Are We As Humans Really That Different From Computers?

Human-Computer Psychologically and even physiologically we tend to think of our technology in anthropomorphic terms and these days sometimes our computers seem to almost be alive.

There is ample science fiction written about machines becoming conscious and taking over, along with the famous Turing Test of whether a machine’s communication could ever be mistaken completely for human. So with my own background in software training, and looking ahead to this week’s Science and Nonduality Conference in San Jose where the nature of the “Self” is a huge topic, I want to explore this more deeply: where is the “identity” in the computer actually  located (if at all) and how does it coincide with our own similar inquiry.

The genesis of this is once again my own work with Michael Jeffreys who often does a similar inquiry, and comes up with the realization that the “I” is the earliest sensation that was ever felt— and then the question arises – “if I am a feeling — Who or What felt it?”

Where Is The “I” In Your Computer?

The first place to begin with the computer would be the CPU or the chip; we often describe a PC as its Pentium (Intel) chip as in “I bought an i5 from Hewlett-Packard or Gateway.” For apple users -who I notice tend to have a bit more of a tendency to personalize and even “fall in love” with their devices -it would be referred to as their iMac or Macbook Air for example.

But the chip -while it is certainly the brain and processing center for the information that flows through the computer -is clearly not its identity because there are millions of identical chips, and even though the ONE in your PC might have a unique serial number (like your own social security number), once the electricity is turned off, it’s dead.  When you go to sleep, at least you wake up. The chip alone does nothing.

If you’ve ever listened to the beep-beep when the computer “boots up” you may know that there is a “BIOS” or basic input/output system that comes with the chip as primary software before the hard drive is accessed.  This is what allows the disk to communicate with the peripherals like the hard drive and monitor so that anything can begin to happen.

But this robotic set of commands isn’t a self—first of all every Gateway or Mac uses the same set of BIOS, and similarly we can dismiss the operating system, even though it may have another unique serial number, even if it can be “personalized” with a desktop or set of custom features. It is only when we begin to personalize further, with a set of programs and files that are created within the machine itself that a seemingly unique identity seems to take shape.

In fact the software, which can make calculations and even decisions like when to “wake up” (using commands that “you” have programmed) seems to be the “thinking” in the machine that makes it most human. But here we can begin to see that even such “thought” clearly does not constitute a self because it proceeds according to a program originally designed by others, and even if customized and personalized, with files saved in a personal repository or “memory,” there is always another program, file or thought that supersedes what has been “saved.”

Of course, who is making these decisions and “inputs” with a mouse or keyboard – “you” the “end user” – but that’s another “story,” isn’t it?

Dying Senior Scientist Shares Insider Truth About Area 51, Extraterrestrials, UFO’s & Anti-Gravity

Not long before Boyd Bushman passed away on August 7, 2014, he agreed to be video recorded for a short documentary where he openly spoke about his personal experiences with Area 51, UFOs, aliens and anti-gravity ideas. (Video below)

Boyd Bushman was a retired Senior Scientist for Lockheed Martin. He had an impressive forty year career where he was awarded many patents while working with defense contractors Hughes Aircraft, General Dynamics, Texas Instruments and Lockheed Martin.

**You can view some of those patents here. There is also another one you can view linked in this article below.**

In the last video footage (ever) of him recorded right before his death, he shared some fascinating information and photos about Area 51, Aliens, UFO’s and anti-gravity. His images of aliens will of course raise controversy given the mixed beliefs that exist amongst people about the existence of them, but could perhaps be among the most fascinating evidence out there -and from a decorated and credible source.

After all, this wouldn’t be the first time highly ranked individuals have spoken out about this type of stuff. The statements made by them seem to corroborate with all of the official documentation about UFOs that’s already been released for public viewing. Dozens of governments around the world have already disclosed this existence.

“We already have the means to travel among the stars, but these technologies are locked up in black projects and it would take an act of God to ever get them out to benefit humanity… anything you can imagine we already know how to do.”  – Ben Rich, Former Head of Lockheed Skunk Works

“Nature never uses English, it doesn’t speak any language, but yet it’s talking to us all the time. The key thing is to identify what it’s saying.” – Boyd Bushman, Former Senior Research Scientist Engineer and Inventor at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics.

Addressing Controversy

Boyd’s Wikipedia page has been disputed for accuracy. The reason given is that the information is not properly sourced. The controversy seems to stem around Boyd’s actual involvement in Lockheed Martin. Researching around for a while I was able to find patents filed by Lockheed Martin with Boyd Bushman’s name on it. Again, there are more linked earlier in this article as well.

As per Bushman’s claims, below is an image of plans for the first reverse engineered space craft that Lockheed Martin, and himself, put together.

Pope Francis says evolution is real and God is no wizard

Speaking to the Pontifical Academy of Science, Pope Francis said that the Big Bang and evolution do not contradict the "intervention of God" as a creator, rather it requires it.

Delivering an address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Pope Francis continued his habit of making provocative, seemingly progressive statements. The pontiff appeared to endorse the theory of the Big Bang and told the gathering at the Vatican that there was no contradiction between believing in God as well as the prevailing scientific theories regarding the expansion of our universe.

“When we read about creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so,” Francis said. “He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfillment.”

The pope avoids gesturing at the thorny issue (at least for some Christians) of whether humans descended from apes. Atheists argue, moreover, that understanding the Big Bang and what emerged from that cosmic moment obviates a need to believe in a deity. On that count, Francis obviously disagrees. He repeated the idea of God not being a “magician,” an entity that conjured all into being.

“God is not... a magician, but the Creator who brought everything to life,” Francis said. “Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.”

In other words, to borrow from an earlier Enlightenment idea, God is more a clockmaker than a conjurer of miracles.

Such thinking is not new for the Catholic Church, which for six decades — since the reforms of Pope Pius XII — has espoused belief in theistic evolution. That hinges, of course, on the fundamental acceptance of a higher power.

Stronger Artificial Muscles Will Make Robots Seem More Human

Ray Baughman, a professor of chemistry and director of the NanoTech Institute at the University of Texas at Dallas, recalls seeing a beautiful woman across the room while at a conference in South Korea. But the closer he got, the more disturbed he became.

“That was EveR, a humanoid robot,” he told me. EveR’s creators had done a pretty good job of emulating the human form, he said, but “she didn’t have enough muscles in her face to smile naturally.” That’s just the sort of subtle imperfection that makes robots more creepy than friendly.

Artificial muscles have the capacity to transform robots and prosthetic devices, but they’re surprisingly hard to make. Researchers have been trying for years to have them contract and release quickly enough while still being flexible and not brittle. They’ve tried lots of different structures, from fishing wire that stretches to a rubber cylinder that can be electrically stimulated to contract.

But one of the most futuristic-feeling concepts is the idea of a gel-based muscle, which could completely reshape the way we think about muscles packaging—if anyone can ever build one strong enough to last.

Japanese researchers published a study earlier this month in the journal Nature Communications about a new hydrogel, or a network of synthetic molecules that can expand by absorbing water, that they say could be used as an artificial muscle, even if they're not yet ready to be implemented in the field.

“Traditionally, gels have been used by researchers in many fields because the preparation of the gels is very easy,” Yukikazu Takeoka, a professor of molecular engineering at Nagoya University in Japan and an author of the Nature study, wrote in an email. But he and his team have found a way to strengthen the gels, he said, which should inspire other researchers to find different applications.

5,500-Year-Old Circular Pyramid Discovered in Peru

Archaeologists in Peru have discovered an ancient ceremonial center and a circular-shaped pyramid in Miravalles, in the region of Cajamarca in northern Peru.

According to a news report in The Epoch Times, the site dates back an incredible 5,500 years. Until now, it was believed that the Norte Chico civilization of Supe, Peru was the earliest civilization of the Americas.

Their capital was the Sacred City of Caral - a 5,000-year-old metropolis complete with complex agricultural practices, rich culture, and monumental architecture, including six large pyramidal structures, stone and earthen platform mounds, temples, amphitheatre,  sunken circular plazas, and residential areas.

However, the latest discovery suggests that the Norte Chico civilization may not be the oldest after all.

The discovery was announced by research Victor Colan at a Peruvian press conference on 21st October. Colan revealed that the research team found a ceremonial center and a circular step-pyramid (known in Peru as Huacas), with three platforms 30 meters in diameter.

Did A Pope And An Emperor Team Up To Erase 300 Years Of History?

Did A Pope And An Emperor Team Up To Erase 300 Years Of History?

Pope Sylvester II and Holy Roman Emperor Otto III were two powerful men and two ambitious friends. Just how ambitious? There is a (very controversial) theory that between them, they forcibly ushered in a new millennium... 300 years early.

Holy Roman Emperor Otto III was a man with a lot of power and a flair for self-aggrandizement. He had quite a bit to work with; the Holy Roman Empire was a huge amalgamation of what is now Germany, much of eastern Europe, northern Italy, and eastern France, and he was put in charge of it when he was three years old. He was crowned, famously, on Christmas day — the same day the original Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne was crowned. (More on that later.)

Like another famous person whose reign was ushered in on Christmas day, Otto was threatened by a mad king, his uncle, who coveted his power. The young boy emerged unscathed after some military maneuvers, and was returned to his mother, a Byzantine princess. She brought him up with the idea that he would civilize the barbarous kingdom she had married into.

Otto III's main goal has been shared by many leaders throughout history: to usher in a new Rome. He funded scholars and artists and he sought to expand his kingdom. He also sought to cast himself, if not as a god or as the messiah, then as some kind of predestined savior. He wanted his reign to be portentous.

He was helped in this by his mentor, Gerbert of Aurillac. While Otto was born to the most powerful couple in the western world, Gerbert came from nowhere. His parents and the circumstances of his childhood are unknown, which means they were humble enough that no one cared to record them and Gerbert probably did not advertise them. The "of Aurillac" part of his name is known because, while quite young, he travelled to and entered the monastery of Aurillac. For much of the first and second millennia, the church was the only way for the relatively poor to ascend to wealth and power, and Gerbert took full advantage of it. He traveled and studied, using Arabic numerals to make calculations in his head that, up until then, people had thought impossible. He put his knowledge to work, designing an organ that harmonized more perfectly than any other yet made. There is a legend that has Gerbert doing calculations that had never been done before by converting an entire church floor into an abacus. He had giant disks made, and recruited students to move them. He stood high up in the church, taking in the view and ordering his assistants to move the disks around as he made calculations.
